How to improve the drainage system of your garden?

If even moderate rain takes forever to drain in your garden, you know that your garden has a drainage problem. This will leave your plants vulnerable to diseases and so it is important to find a drainage solution. To help you fix the problem, here are some effective tips that you can follow:

  • Try to improve the soil

Use a lot of organic matter as soil with high organic content will allow the excessive moisture to drain through, absorbing the required amount of water.

  • Garden in raised beds

When you plant in raised beds, the drainage problems can easily be averted to help your plants grow better. You can use designer flower pots in raised area to give your garden an appealing look and control the soil within.

  • Route the flow of water away from the garden area

If you want a drainage solution for your garden, create a diversion channel for the water flow using a shovel or trowel. This doesn’t mean that you’ll drive the excess water into another important part of the yard or your neighbour’s garden. You can route the channel into the gutter or to a hole dug and filled with gravel.

  • Make a gravel channel

Rerouting water flow might help you to solve the drainage problem. However, you need to dig the channel deeper and fill it with crushed gravel. To hide it from view you can scoop a little soil over it. This gravel channel is effective enough to take the extra water away for better growth of your plants.

We hope this post will help you to solve your drainage problem and create a beautiful garden. But in case of severe drainage problems, curtain drain or drainage tiles may be the options. You can take the advice from an expert in case the problem is severe.
